Barcelona City Council maintains cleaning the seafront water

The team responsible for keeping Barcelona’s beaches clean uses a unique combination of boats and sand vehicles, operating daily during the summer season. This summer, the sea in front of Barcelona is particularly clean, aided by favourable coastal currents and the lack of rain which has helped reduce waste on the coast. The Deputy Mayor of Urban Development, Antoni Vives, has highlighted that “this is a particularly good year for swimming in Barcelona since the water quality is high”.

100,000 year old elephant remains found near Barcelona

It is the first time that the complete remains of an elephant have been found in the Catalan mountain range, Massís del Garraf, located in Greater Barcelona. Archaeologists from the University of Barcelona found the remains which have been dated as up to 100,000 years old. The remains were found in the ‘Cova del Rinoceront’ (Rhinoceros’ cave), in Castelldefels, a unique Palaeolithic site in Catalonia. The remains show that there were elephants in the central Catalan coastal area before the mammoths’ own arrival during the Ice Age.

Barça won the Paris Trophy beating PSG on penalties after Messi and Rafinha had scored to make it 2-2 at full time. After the friendlies in Hamburg (1-2) and Tangier (0-8), this was a tougher test for Tito Villanova’s men, as Carlos Ancelotti’s much reinforced PSG , who are looking to be a force in the European game this coming season, held them to a 2-2 draw at the Parc de Principes, before the visitors won on penalties.

Fines for illegal massages on Barcelona’s beaches increase sevenfold

The police have started an initiative to crack down on illegal services on Barcelona’s beaches, visited by 3.5 million people last summer. Between June and July, the police have dealt with nearly 4,500 complaints concerning street vendors, 93% more than in 2011. The operations have a dedicated unit of 70 officers to enforce the regulations on the beaches, working both in uniform and in plain clothes.

A reduction of the solidarity contribution to Spain by a third would leave Catalonia with no deficit

According to the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, if Catalonia continued contributing to Spain’s fiscal redistribution scheme but it did so to a lesser extent, Catalan public finances would have no deficit and Catalonia’s public debt would be much smaller. The Chamber reminded that Catalonia is giving 8.6% of its GDP each year to the rest of Spain in terms of solidarity, an amount that has no other equivalent in Europe. In addition, the Chamber emphasised that this contribution is “excessive” as basic services and infrastructures in Catalonia are not properly funded.

Barcelona Zoo looks to the future with a €25 million investment, captive breeding and the introduction of new animals

After several controversies regarding the possible transfer of the Zoo to outside Barcelona, management has opted for new breeding programs of species such as the Komodo dragon and also welcomes a new elephant. They have also decided to build a dolphinarium alongside the Zoo with private funding, which would end the project to create a marine zoo at the Forum.

Spending by tourists in Barcelona increases by 124 euros and is close to 2007 levels, with an average of 741 euros

Barcelona is overcoming the effects of the economic crisis. So says, the President of Tourism of Barcelona, Joan Gaspart, who revealed spending by tourists in Barcelona in 2011 came to on average 741 euros, 124 euros more than in 2010. In the first six months of 2012, the number of tourists has increased by 1.69%, overnight stays by 2.26%, and credit card spending has increased by 27.08%, compared to the same period of 2011. Gaspart stressed that these increases, although "modest", show that the industry "is doing a good job" to the point where predictions given for the second half of the year also indicate an improvement.
