According to the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE), the Catalan GDP fell by 1% last year. However, according to the Catalan Statistics Institute (Idescat), it dropped by 1.3%. Regarding Spain’s economy, the INE declared that it fell by 1.4% while the Idescat indicates it plummeted by 1.9%. The reason for these differences is that data from both institutes are based on estimates and are still provisional. In any case, Catalonia is one of the Autonomous Communities with the mildest recession in Spain and continues to be that with the highest GDP, €198.63 billion. In addition, Catalonia is among those with the highest GDP per capita, set at €27,248 while the Spanish average was €22,772.

The Catalan textile industry accounts for 34% of Spanish fashion exports. A new report by “The Brandery” shows that in 2011, Catalonia was a crucial factor in the success of Spain’s growing fashion industry and emphasises its continuing and growing importance on the international fashion stage. The report was shown at an event this weekend and provides an encouraging insight into Catalonia’s significance in the Spanish fashion sector.

Sixty Catalan companies work out of the country and more than 2,400 export to the Argentinean Republic. “The lack of legal certainty in Argentina is not new, […] so the firms that do business […] have learnt to coexist with constant changes in the legislation”, stated AIS Sales Director.

The volume of freight and liquids transported through Tarragona Port in the first 3 months of the year reached more than 9 million tonnes. The movement of liquids increased significantly, notably oil derivate products, after last year’s technical halt at Repsol’s refinery.

Catalonia’s exports during last January and February had a total value of €9.24 billion. Catalan imports increased by 0.24% in the same period and have, registering in those two months a total value of €11.22 billion. The European Union received 64.28% of Catalonia’s exports. However, exports to markets such as Switzerland and Russia increased by 69% and 40% respectively.

The Russian company Lukoil has reached an agreement with the Catalan company Meroil to build 13 new oil tanks at Barcelona Port, which are able to store 360,000 cubic metres. Furthermore, Barcelona Port is the only Mediterranean port ready to host the largest and deepest oil tankers. The Catalan President, Artur Mas, unveiled the infrastructure and emphasised Catalonia is strengthening its position as “Europe’s gateway for goods coming from Asia and North Africa”. He also noted Catalonia’s attractive position for foreign investment. Barcelona Port is linked by international width standard railway with Central Europe and has the Zona Franca logistics and industrial district next to it.

In Catalonia, there has been an annual growth in exports of 19.12% while the commercial deficit also rose by 39.22%.
