Between this Friday and Sunday, 17 cruisers will pass through the Port of Barcelona, which is the largest number of boats arriving at the Catalan harbour in a single weekend this year. The boats are transporting 64,000 passengers who will be spending 61 euros per day per person if they are just passing by or 114 euros if they are starting or ending their trip in Barcelona. In addition, the ships’ crews will be spending an average of 30 euros per person. Barcelona will end 2013 with a total of 2.6 million cruise passengers having passed through its harbour, close to the overall record from 2011. Barcelona is the world’s fourth largest harbour for cruise ships.

Passenger traffic from the Catalan capital’s harbour increased by 18% in the period from January to March, and that of cruise passengers grew by 40%. In total, 9.8 million tonnes of goods were transported through the Port of Barcelona. The tonnes of goods transported via container increased by 0.8%. Regarding the transport of cars, which is one of the harbour’s main activities, 164,452 car units were transported through the port, a 1% increase compared to last year.

The Port of Barcelona, one of southern Europe’s main transport infrastructures, continues to bring positive results. Over the last year the Catalan harbour unveiled two new container terminals, an investment to consolidate the trend of attracting greater container traffic, as the 8.7% increase shows. In addition, the number of cars transported increased by 9.8%. These figures are to be added to the 12% increase in container exports and 25% growth of car exports through Barcelona’s harbour in 2011. Besides, the port in the capital of Catalonia continues to lead the cruise ship sector in Europe, transporting 2.4 million passengers and almost reaching last year’s record high of 2.6 million cruisers.

50.2% of the people travelling between Barcelona and Madrid in the first six months of the year used the High Speed Train (AVE), instead of the car, bus or airplane. 1.4 million people used this AVE line between January and June, a 6.2% increase compared to the same period last year. In addition, the Port of Barcelona had 905,000 passengers in the first half of 2012, making it the first port in Spain in terms of passenger traffic.

8,000 cruise passengers will visit the Costa Brava port, 18% more than last year’s figures. The Crystal Serenity a luxury cruise liner with 14 floors and 550 suites will be visiting the Catalan coastal town.

Passengers that catch a cruise after arriving in Barcelona by plane can check-in at the airport until November 6th. At the same time, travellers who arrive by cruise and then catch a flight can check-in at the harbour terminal. More than 47,000 passengers used these services last year.

TEAM Ports&Maritime will build the five passenger boarding bridges for Hong Kong’s new cruise ship terminal, designed by Norman Foster. According to the company, it is the largest contract ever made in the sector. Furthermore, the Catalan company, which is part of the Adelte Group, will supply two more bridges for Sydney’s new White Bay terminal and two more for Cape Canaveral’s new terminal. The company has also just installed three passenger boarding bridges at Singapore’s International Cruise Terminal.

The Port of Barcelona has topped the European ranking of passenger numbers once again. 2,642,493 people passed through Barcelona Port in 2011, a 12.69% increase compared to the previous year. The Port of Barcelona registered a record in the number of containers destined to international exports. China has consolidated its position as the main destination of containers departing from Barcelona. In addition, the number of cruisers boomed by 17% in the first eight months of the year compared to the same period last year.

It is the second busiest day of the year for cruise ships after August 20th, when nine ships with 31,000 passengers are expected. Barcelona is the first European and Mediterranean cruise port and fourth in the world, after three Florida ports.
