The Catalan Government has been issuing retail bonds over the last two years as a regular way of financing its liquidity. All the previous issues have been a success, with high demand. Between April 2nd and April 24th Catalan citizens will be able to buy one year and two year treasury bonds of the Catalan Government’s debt, with an interest rate of 4.5% and 5% respectively.
The Catalan bank Banc Sabadell’s profits experienced a 39% fall when compared to its 2010 results. However, the entity strengthened its balance sheet thanks to an increase in the core capital ratio, which added up to 10.3%. Despite the persistent instability of the financial markets, Banc Sabadell expanded its market share and its products and services reached 2.7 million customers.
With this operation, the Catalan Banc Sabadell becomes Spain’s fifth largest banking group. The Bank of Spain has decided to accept Banc Sabadell’s offer to purchase the CAM, a savings bank that was rescued and restructured. Banc Sabadell buys CAM after the savings bank completed a €5.25 billion regularisation process to balance its books. Banc Sabadell will take on 20% of the expected losses over the next ten years from CAM’s real estate properties.
Thanks to this purchase, Sabadell United Bank, the US branch of the Catalan Banc Sabadell, significantly increases its size. Lydian Private Bank has assets worth 1,607 million dollars, client deposits of 1,224 million dollars and loans worth some 383 million. Sabadell is particularly strong in Florida, where it already has its US headquarters.
Unnim and CatalunyaCaixa would have 4.5% and 4.8% of core capital respectively. However, the provisions that all Spanish banks must have to face difficult times have not been taken into account as they did not exist in other European banking systems. With these funds taken into account, Unnim and CatalunyaCaixa would have approved the tests with 6.2% and 6.3% respectively. CaixaBank, the most important Catalan bank passes the test with 6.4%.
They also asked for an improvement in vocational training and development of the Catalan economy’s internationalisation. The President of the Catalan Government, Artur Mas, met today at the ESADE Business School with 200 of the most important business people in Catalonia. Among others, the presidents and main directors of Abertis, La Caixa, Banc Sabadell, Seat or even FC Barcelona were present and Mas asked them to take the lead in the economic recovery.
However, the Catalan bank does not close the door to integrating a financial entity in the future. Banc Sabadell wants to take advantatge of the restructuring process of the financial system to grow throughout Spain, told its President Josep Oliu.
The Catalan bank Banc Sabadell reaches the 8% milestone by issuing 126.4 million new shares, which represent 10% of its capital. The movement is part of the bank’s strategy to strengthen its capital, foreseeing the future stress tests and the Basel III rules.
Banc Sabadell received 27.4% less profit compared with the same period in 2009. The net profit has been calculated after deducting a provision to cover a potential increase of debtors. The financial entity saw credit loss provision increases of 38% until its third trimester.
