Italian ice cream maker creates Barcelona gelato flavor
White chocolate, turmeric and raspberry ripple give taste of Catalan capital in unique creation
Anyone wishing to walk down the street in Barcelona while eating Barcelona-named ice cream can start celebrating. The recently opened Badiani ice cream shop in the Catalan capital's 232 Rosselló street (very close to Passeig de Gràcia boulevard) has unveiled its latest creation: a mix of white chocolate, turmeric, and raspberry ripple in honor of its new host city.
The internationally awarded ice cream maker, Paolo Pomposi, decided to represent the Catalan flag colors - yellow and red - mixing ingredients such as white chocolate with turmeric, and raspberry ripple, raspberry syrup injected into vanilla ice cream. Other ingredients used are milk, eggs, and soy milk.
The new flavor will be added to the over 100 ice cream options Badiani offers in its stores, including the one in Barcelona’s city center, in London, and in Florence, Italy.
Using white chocolate was key because "in all my trips to Spain, white chocolate has always been there, and therefore, it needed to be part of the Barcelona gelato," Pomposi explained in a press release.
The problem they faced was turning a white ingredient yellow as they claim that "none of the Badiani ice creams has any colorant, so turmeric was the perfect ingredient to get the yellow color, and a mix of perfect flavors," the ice cream maker added.
In regards to the raspberry, it turns out it is "one of the most requested flavors by Spanish tourists in their Florence establishments, so it seemed like a must-have flavor to create Barcelona Gelato."
This is not the first Catalan-inspired ice cream flavor made by Badiani. Back in April, for the Sant Jordi (or Saint George) celebrations, the company created a Sant Jordi flavor mixing cream, eggs, chocolate, and candy finished off with flowers on top.
