New FGC trains will connect Barcelona with airport by end of 2025
Trains to be 'more classic, sturdier and wider'
The new Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) commuter trains that will connect Barcelona with the airport will begin testing at the end of 2025.
The new convoys were presented on Wednesday at the Catalan government's stand at the Smart City Expo World Congress that is taking place in Hospitalet de Llobregat's Fira Gran Via.
FGC's project director, Albert Tortajada, has confirmed that after the tests, the service will be available in 2026.
The manufacturing company, Alstom, is building the ten fast trains in its warehouse in Vallès Occidental county, just outside of Barcelona. These trains will then link the Catalan capital with the Josep Tarradellas Barcelona El Prat airport.
Tortajada described these trains as "more classic, sturdier and wider" than the current models in service.
The trains connecting the Catalan capital with the airport will have 209 seats and a total capacity of 656 users. Inside the trains, there will be around twenty information screens that will also give information on the flight status.
The trains will operate every 15 minutes, with an estimated journey time of less than 20 minutes between Passeig de Gràcia station and the airport Terminal 1.
AI-Powered buses
At the Smart City Expo World Congress, Barcelona also presented a pilot program at 15 bus stops that will be equipped with AI technology to improve the city's transit and information to users.
It is a pioneering initiative by the Canadian company BusPas that will start in February 2025 and will be assessed throughout the course of a year.
