A teenager who previously had Covid-19 has undergone a heart transplant at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron Hospital.

It is the first transplant in Catalonia and Spain on someone who has overcome the virus.

The patient is a teenage girl who suffers from a narrowing of the opening of the heart's mitral valve.

The transplant was completed after the patient overcame pneumonia caused by coronavirus, which led to her being admitted to the children’s hospital for twelve days.

The patient did not have a severe case of Covid-19 and following treatment from the medical staff at Vall d'Hebron she was confirmed as recovered via two negative PCR tests.

One month after the onset of Covid-19 symptoms, doctors deemed her ready to undergo the heart transplant.
