Three mountain stages in 2024 Volta a Catalunya route
Cycling race will begin on March 18 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and finish in Barcelona one week later
The route for the 2024 Volta a Catalunya cycling race has been confirmed, throwing up three mountain stages for riders to contend in the 103rd edition of the race.
Some of the best cyclists in the world will compete again on Catalan roads in a new edition that also features new locations.
The historic UCI World Tour Catalan race will have seven stages, starting in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and finishing in Barcelona.
Route 103rd edition Volta a Catalunya:
Stage 1. Monday March 18: Sant Feliu de Guíxols – Sant Feliu de Guíxols.
Stage 2. Tuesday March 19: Mataró – Vallter / Setcases Vall de Camprodon)
Stage 3. Wednesday March 20: Sant Joan de les Abadesses – Port Ainé
Stage 4. Thursday March 21: Sort – Lleida
Stage 5. Friday March 22: Altafulla – Viladecans
Stage 6. Saturday 23 March: Berga – Queralt
Stage 7. Sunday March 24: Barcelona – Barcelona
For the second year in a row, the Volta will have three high-altitude finishes, at Vallter, Port Ainé, and Queralt.
Finishes at Queralt and Viladecans are new features for this year's tour, as is Altafulla as a stage departure point.
There will also be long-awaited returns in Berga, which will host a stage start six decades after it last did; Lleida, for the first time in 11 years; and departures from Sort and Sant Joan de les Abadesses.
For the third consecutive year, Sant Feliu de Guíxols host the beginning of the race as the start and finish point of the first stage, as well as hosting all the preparations prior to the race.
Last season, Primoz Roglic saw off Remco Evenepoel in Sant Feliu in the first chapter of the duel that ultimately saw Roglic victorious.
The route for the Women's Volta has not yet been defined, but the race will take place from June 7-9, 2024.
