Motorcycle Grand Prix in Catalonia extended until 2031
Catalan government and organizers reach deal to keep race at Montmeló
The Catalonia Motorcycle Grand Prix will continue at the Circuit de Catalunya at Montmeló outside of Barcelona until 2031 following an agreement between the Catalan government and the event’s organizers.
The Catalan Labor Ministry confirmed to Catalan media, that an agreement has been reached to secure the motorcycling competition at the Barcelona race track for the period 2027-2031.
The deal is set to be formally signed on Thursday by the Catalan Labor Minister Miquel Sàmper and Dorna, the company responsible for organizing the Grand Prix.
Sàmper described the renewal negotiations as “complicated, long, and difficult”, due to Dorna’s plans to reduce the number of MotoGP races in Spain, and the high level of competition among host locations.
The minister stressed that a new contract would bring a “very significant economic return across various industries,” referring in particular to the hospitality, tourism, and automotive sectors.
"Circuit de Catalunya returns around €500 million annually, and we cannot let those sports events leave Catalonia," he told journalists in Parliament on Wednesday.
For the Catalan executive, signing the MotoGP deal, "is important for the sports calendar, as we want to be a sports destination," Berni Álvarez, sports minister, told journalists after Sàmper. "Signing up for MotoGP for five more years shows that Catalonia is a successful site," he added.
As for the future of Formula 1 remaining in Catalonia, after a new 10-year contract was signed with Madrid last year, Sàmper remains “optimistic”.
However, he remained tight-lipped about the negotiations, stating that “silence is usually the key to success.”
