Barcelona wants to broadcast Barça Femení Champions League final on Plaça Catalunya
Catalan capital's mayor wants to make women's sport more visible
Barcelona wants to set up a large screen on Plaça Catalunya square for the Champions League final, on May 25 at 6pm, featuring the city's own Barça Femení football team.
"The city council is working on obtaining the broadcasting rights, to make women's sports more visible and generate a great atmosphere and celebration," Barcelona's mayor, Jaume Collboni, said on X while announcing the city's plans.
"If we succeed, we expect you on Plaça Catalunya to cheer and watch a game that can be historic for Barça," he added.
The Barça Femení team will face this challenge only a few days after winning the Copa de la Reina in Zaragoza on Saturday, where the squad swept past Real Sociedad 8-0. This completed a domestic double, after being crowned league champions earlier this month.
Next for the team is travelling to Bilbao to take on Lyon in the Champions League next Saturday.
History making team
Barça Femení has been breaking records and making headlines the last few years. On May 5 they become the first team to win five consecutive Liga F titles.
The team won 27 out of 28 Liga F games, scoring a total of 129 goals, only having 9 goals passing their goalkeeper.
