Barça fans celebrate women's Champions League trophy with team
FC Barcelona greeted by Catalan president and city mayor at Barcelona's Plaça Sant Jaume after beating Wolfsburg 3-2
Over 3,000 FC Barcelona fans celebrated the women's Champions League trophy win with the team on Sunday evening at 6 pm in Barcelona's Plaça Sant Jaume square.
Barça celebrated their second Champions League title after beating German Wolfsburg 3-2 on Saturday in a match in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
The 2022/23 season achieves a milestone the team has been trying for years after becoming the European leaders in the 2020/2021 season.
The group was greeted by the Catalan president Pere Aragonès at the Catalan government's headquarters and later by the Barcelona temporary mayor Ada Colau. At both occasions, the team carried the trophy around, and crossed Plaça Sant Jaume square walking as both administrations are facing each other.
During Aragonès' speech, he praised the team as a "role model, as well as work, effort, and learning when things do not turn out as they were supposed to," he said referring to the lost last year which saw FCB loose the opportunity to win the trophy in Torino, Italy.
The president mentioned the come back after the 0-2 score ahead of halftime on Saturday's match, and said that the moment "inspired all of us."
Meanwhile, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta thanked the team and said: "Barcelonians, we have the trophy here!"
Straight after, Alexia Putellas, the captain of the team, said that the celebration was something the "younger ones had not yet seen before and it was very important for Barça celebrations to return and specially with the femení team and the Champions League."
And as celebrations were not enough, the team after the official speeches went out the Palau de la Generalitat balcony, as the male team used to do years ago, and many Catalan presidents have addressed residents during Catalonia's history to say a few words, or to be more specific to sing several chants. Going from: "Aleeeexia, Aleeeeexia," to "be part of Barça is the best!"
But while the balcony was full of Barça players, it was on the ground where the 3,000 fans chanted and celebrated the victory. Many young girls wearing FCB jerseys, but also teenagers seeing their idols up close as the players literally walked meters away from them.
At one moment, Laporta and Putellas, who were carrying the trophy out of the Generalitat into the Barcelona city hall, handed the award to a fan on the front row.
At the city hall, Barcelona temporary mayor Ada Colau, as the elections just took place, she praised that it is good for "equality," that the women's team won the Champions League, and also that "it is important for small kids to see female role models and for them to see that football can also be played by women," the mayor said.
Her wish is for the Catalan capital to host, in the near future, the Women's World Cup, something which Joan Laporta agreed with and said that the team's infrastructure is "well ready to do so."
