BBC names Barça's Aitana Bonmatí among top 100 most influential women
News outlet highlights footballer's defence of gender equality in football
FC Barcelona player Aitana Bonmatí has been named one of the world's 100 most influential women, according to the BBC.
In the list, there are notable names such as former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama and human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
The news outlet highlights Bonmatí's success in winning the football league as well as the Champions League during last season playing for the FC Barcelona women's team.
However, the BBC says that "it was during the World Cup that she became a global superstar." They include her "integral" role in the team's victory after she scored three goals and was named the best player of the tournament.
Bonmatí, aged 25, has recently won the Ballon d'Or and has also been named as this year's UEFA player.
But the focus of BBC article is on Bonmatí being "unafraid to use her voice on and off the field, as she speaks out for equality in football for women."
During her UEFA acceptance speech, the Catalan player showed support for Jenni Hermoso and other footballers in similar situations after former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales kissed Hermoso on the lips during the World Cup victory celebration.
