Water network breakdown leaves El Port de la Selva without supply
'Indefinite' water outage hits Costa Brava town during peak tourist season
A breakdown in the water network in the coastal town of El Port de la Selva has left residents without water since Monday night.
The water cut in the picturesque town on the Costa Brava comes at the height of the tourist season.
Although the town council initially warned that residents could be left without water for an "indefinite" period of time, supply could be normalized by Wednesday.
An incident in one of the two wells that provide water to the municipality is the reason for the water cut.
The director of the Costa Brava Water Consortium explained that the problem with the well was due to clogging caused by salt deposits.
The consortium expects intermittent service for the rest of the day as several tanker trucks from Colera are delivering water to the reservoirs.
In addition, a temporary pipeline from Llançà will bring more water to the town.
These two measures should restore enough water reserves to restart the desalination plant and normalize service by Wednesday.
Hours before the outage on Monday night, the council advised residents not to use tap water for cooking or drinking due to high levels of salt in the supply.
Some neighbors say they have a small thread of water running through their tap, others can fill the toilet cistern, and others have no water at all.
Many have gone to the beach to fill buckets and bottles of water, while others are restocking their supplies at supermarkets.
In fact, by mid-morning the supermarket ran out of stock and the entire aisle was empty.
