Unionists take to the streets of Barcelona
7,000 pro-Spain demonstrators rally in support of Spain's unity
Unionists took to the streets. 7,000 pro-Spain demonstrators gathered in Barcelona in support of Spain's unity on Sunday. They called for a government that "respects the law." Representatives of the main unionist parties (Ciutadans, the Catalan Socialists and the People's Party) joined the gathering. The president of the Ciutadans party, Albert Rivera, the Spanish Health minister, Dolors Montserrat, the former Spanish Foreign Affairs minister José Manuel García-Margallo and the leader of the Catalan Socialists in Catalonia, Miquel Iceta, attended the pro-Spain rally.
Still, among the attendees stood out the former French Prime Minister Manuel Valls. He said that "the independence project has failed." The former French Prime Minister also stressed that the European Union will not support Catalonia's push for independence. "Mediation is not possible," he stated during the demonstration. Valls warned that "changing Europe's borders means war." Yet he called for "dialogue" between the Catala and the Spanish administrations.
