Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police detained two people in the city of Salt, in the northern Gironès county, after they stole a suitcase that contained high-end jewelry and watches worth €8.5 million.

On Wednesday afternoon, the two thieves stole the suitcase from the Emirates Airlines bag drop area at the Barcelona airport.

The piece of luggage, as first reported by Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, and later confirmed by the Catalan News Agency (ACN) was Hermès bag with objects and cash worth €8.5 million.

The suitcase contained different jewelry pieces like a €4.5M diamond ring, a €750,000 Chanel brooch, and €500,000 diamond earrings as well as a €800,000 Bulgary watch and €10,000 in cash; among others.

The police identified the thieves and the rented car they escaped with through airport security camera footage.

The police controlling the traffic in Girona then located the vehicle and arrested the two thieves, thus recovering the suitcase and its contents.
