Suspected ISIS terrorist arrested in Barcelona
Detainee had international connections and disseminated information about explosives
Spain's Civil Guard police arrested a person in Barcelona for alleged membership in the terrorist organization ISIS, police said.
The operation began last year when police discovered a radicalized individual using encrypted messaging platforms to express support for ISIS. He translated and distributed jihadist messages about terrorist activities and instructions on how to make explosives.
Investigators were able to prove that the detainee was attempting to gain followers and support for ISIS through his publications. He also used cryptocurrencies, suggesting a possible link to the financing of terrorist activities.
The detainee also had international links to jihadists in Sweden and Canada who were arrested for similar acts.
The operation to arrest this individual was carried out in cooperation between the Guardia Civil, the Spanish National Intelligence Center, the Swedish Security Service (SAPO), the French Special Intelligence Service (DGSI), and Europol.
The detainee was brought to court on March 19 and is currently in prison awaiting trial.
