Spain's judicial authorities appoint Mercè Caso as president of Catalan High Court
Progressive candidate beat conservative Cristina Ferrando to role
The General Consell of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Spain's highest judicial body, has elected Mercè Caso as the new president of the Catalan High Court (TSJC).
Mercè Caso is currently the presiding judge of section 12 of the Barcelona Court. A member of the progressive association Jutges per la Democràcia, she served as the Dean Judge of Barcelona from 2013 to 2021.
Her main rival for the position was the current dean, Cristina Ferrando, from the conservative group APM.
Caso will replace Jesús María Barrientos, who has held the position since 2016.
Caso was born in Barcelona in 1964 and studied Law at the University of Barcelona. She began her judicial career in 1989 and was assigned to the Court of First Instance and Investigation number 1 of Vilafranca del Penedès.
In 1992 she was promoted to the category of magistrate and practiced in the Court of First Instance and Investigation number 6 of Mataró, Criminal number 12 of Barcelona and the Court of First Instance number 19 of Barcelona.
Between 2013 and 2021, she was the most senior judge of the Barcelona courts and, later, a magistrate of the Barcelona Court in section 12, specializing in family law, where she currently practices.
