Ski resorts closed and trains canceled due to strong winds
Gusts of up to 100 km/h expected in Pyrenees on last day of Christmas holidays
Storms bringing blizzards and gusts of wind of up to 100 km/h have affected ski resorts in the Catalan Pyrenees on Sunday. Trains on the R3 Rodalies line have also been canceled.
Temperatures dropped drastically overnight, reaching lows of −7°C on some slopes.
The weather forecast indicates that strong winds will continue throughout Sunday, the last day of the Christmas holiday period, and into Monday morning, before gradually easing on Monday afternoon.
Two ski resorts were forced to close completely: Boí Taüll in Alta Ribagorça and Vallter in Ripollès.
The remaining ski resorts in the Catalan Pyrenees closed some slopes, mainly in higher areas, while keeping other parts open.
Trains have been canceled on the R3 Rodalies line between Ribes de Freser and Puigcerdà due to the strong winds.
Renfe said on Sunday that trains would be affected between approximately 11am and 1pm, with replacement buses provided.
Catalonia's Civil Protection Agency has issued a wind alert, warning gusts could exceed 90 km/h in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, Central Catalonia and in the south.
The Meteorological Service of Catalonia issued a blizzard warning for the Pyrenees, especially on north-facing slopes.
