Roses to close beach until at least Sunday after fuel leak from sunken ship
City council will assess state of the water on Monday, after 30-meter fishing trawler capsized
The city council of Roses, in northern Catalonia, will keep the Almadrava beach area closed for bathing until at least Sunday, following this week's fuel leak from a sunken fishing ship.
On Thursday, a 30-meter-long fishing boat sank in front of the beach and polluted it the waters after fuel began to leak into the sea.
The Fire Department and Maritime Rescue teams succeeded in plugging the leak that same evening, after the emergency teams had already managed to contain the spill at noon.
On Monday morning, the council's security and environmental services will make a new assessment of the state of the water and decide whether it can be reopened. Access to the sand remains open.
The boat 'Toni Li Segundo' sank at around 3:30 am on Thursday at Punta Falconera, about 200 meters from the port and at a depth of 17 meters. The fishing vessel had 2,500 liters of fuel in the tank.
No injuries were reported after the five fishermen on board were rescued by another fishing vessel.
