Public transport subsidies return: All you need to know
Last-minute deal between ruling Socialists and pro-independence Junts secures subsidies until June
Public transport subsidies in Catalonia will return on Thursday following a last-minute deal between the Socialists and the pro-independence party Junts.
Prices increased last week after the Spanish government failed to renew the subsidies in Congress, due to opposition from Junts, the conservative People's Party, and far-right Vox.
After a week of intense political exchanges, the Socialist-led government decided to pass a decree focusing solely on transport subsidies and pensions, which Junts has agreed to approve.
As a result, prices will revert to their previous levels on Thursday when the new decree is published in Spain’s official gazette. Here is how the prices will look from then onward:
Rodalies commuter trains
Free tickets for frequent users on Rodalies commuter trains will be reinstated. As before, a €10 deposit is required to obtain them, which will be refunded after completing 16 trips.
Under the new decree, free Renfe tickets will be guaranteed until June 30, 2025.
Additionally, all tickets purchased before January 22, when the price increase took effect, will remain valid.
T-Usual and T-Jove
Frequent users of metro, train, bus and tram will continue to enjoy a 50% discount on integrated transport cards.
These discounted cards include the T-Jove, for those under 30, and the T-Usual, available to regular commuters offering unlimited travel over 30 days.
The prices for these two cards will remain the same: the T-Usual for Zone 1 will stay at €22, with prices for other zones ranging from €29.65 (Zone 2) to €62.55 (Zone 6).
Meanwhile, the T-Jove, which offers unlimited travel for three months to those under 30, will continue to cost €44 for all six zones.
Tickets that are not subsidized, including the T-Casual, T-Familiar, T-Grup, and T-Dia, will remain at their current prices.
