Protests as Catalan leaders sentenced - live updates
Follow the latest developments as pro-independence supporters take to the streets in response to the conviction of the movement’s leaders
The independence camp in Catalonia is responding with widespread protests to the sentencing of their imprisoned leaders, announced on Monday by Spain's Supreme Court. Road cuts and marches continued on Tuesday after thousands flooded the Barcelona airport the day before, clashing with police and causing over a hundred flight cancelations. A man lost his eye and 131 people received medical attention.
The Catalan president, Quim Torra, blamed all incidents on Madrid and the lengthy prison sentences given to the leaders behind the 2017 independence push. With prison sentences ranging from 9 to 13 years, former officials and activists were convicted for sedition and, in some cases, misuse of public funds.
