Protests across Catalonia against latest imprisonments
Thousands gather to demand freedom for activists
Protests across Catalonia were held from 8 pm local time against the provisional imprisonments of seven pro-independence activists accused of terrorism.
Thousands of people gathered in squares in the country, but especially in Barcelona and Sabadell, where some of the raids leading to the arrests on Monday took place.
In Sabadell, in the capital’s metropolitan area, an event gathering relatives of the imprisoned individuals was held.
One of whom, Anna, in tears, called the operation a “police set up,” and also claimed that “the independence camp is not terrorism.”
Their statement went along the same lines of those of the pro-independence parties, which on Thursday referred to the case as a “state operation.” On Wednesday, president Quim Torra also rejected linking independence with violence or terrorism.
Yet some unionists warned of a potentially explosive situation in Catalonia. “What else needs to happen for Spain’s president to intervene and protect unionists? Must someone be killed?” asked Ciutadans MP Carrizosa.
