Food banks in Catalonia are experiencing a lack of basic foods, such as milk and oil, to supply charities and vulnerable families.
To help the Banc dels Aliments, the main Catalan food bank, the Port of Barcelona and Kings League, a seven-a-side football tournament created by former Barça player Gerard Piqué, have united to donate more than 4,500 liters of milk to the organization to help fill their shelves.
Now the food bank will be able to supply milk for families and people who cannot buy food. "Milk is a basic ingredient in our diet and there is a shortage of this product in food banks in Catalonia," explained Roser Brutau, vice-president of Banc dels Aliments. "We need to raise awareness so society knows about this problem and more people are prompted to collaborate," she added.
The donation by the Port of Barcelona and the Kings League came through a giveaway of football jerseys signed by each team's president. With the money raised, the companies were able to donate a total of 4,631 liters of milk to the Catalan food bank.
"It is an original idea that we never thought of, the fact that a football jersey could turn into a carton of milk," Roser Brutau confesses.
The president of the Port of Barcelona, Lluís Salvadó, said: "We are really happy that we were able to find this new form of collaboration, and we hope to come up with new ways of working together in the future."
