Police reports for robberies, drug offenses, and noise nuisances have decreased in Girona in the first half of 2024, according to local police data released on Wednesday.

Theft was down by 17% and reports of insecurity on the streets decreased by 10% compared to last year. Similarly, the consumption or possession of drugs has also diminished.

However, compared to the same period in 2023, police have received more calls related to street fights, up from 188 to 152.

The data also shows that the number of seized weapons increased from 56 in 2023 up to 91 in the first seven months of 2024. This is due to the new police controls to deal with the problem of illegal weapons.

Noise nuisances have been the source of most of the police calls, resulting in 1,054 calls to the emergency services; a small decrease compared to the 1,097 complaints registered in the same period in 2023.

Girona mayor Lluc Salellas, of the far-left CUP party, stated that safety is a "key point" in the city council's work. "We are active and continuously working on it because it is one of the citizens' worries," Salellas told the Catalan News Agency (ACN) in an interview.

Salellas affirmed that with the current data "the global situation of safety in the city is stable."

When asked about the double crime that took place in Girona's neighborhood of Font de la Pólvora, Salellas stated that "there is an increased police presence in the area."

In addition, the city mayor explained that in September another meeting of the local safety assembly will take place. "We are working on giving solutions to the neighborhood for the short, medium, and long term," Salellas concluded.
