A police operation is underway in Barcelona aiming to dismantle a criminal organization involved in drug trafficking across the world. 

The Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police, the Guardia Civil, and the Australian Federal Police have deployed the operation on Wednesday morning in Barcelona.

The group trafficked cocaine and other synthetic drugs on a global scale, and is understood to be based in Barcelona have have branches in Australia.

Eight searches are planned, including one in the neighborhood of Poblenou, where two arrests have been made, as well as in Plaça del Pi, in Sagrada Família, in Sants, in Sant Martí, and another in Ibiza where agents of the Mossos d'Esquadra traveled.

Around half a dozen arrests have been made in total.
