Police in Spain granted powers to suspend sports events over racism
Ministry empowers security coordinator to stop matches or evacuate stands if chants do not stop
After a football season of controversy over racist chants aimed at several La Liga players – the most prominent being Real Madrid's Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior - Spain's interior ministry has strengthened and improved the tools available to the police to deal with the issue.
Security coordinators may partially or fully evacuate the stands or stop a match if there are racist, xenophobic, homophobic or discriminatory chants against any athlete or specific group either inside or outside the sports grounds, or even on transport to venues.
Sporting authorities can also be sanctioned if they do not cooperate fully with police to prevent and stop uncivil acts.
