Barcelona's new Hospital Clínic will become a reality by 2035. The hospital will move from its current location in the city center to the entrance of the city along the Diagonal Avenue.

The hospital's relocation and expansion has been a priority for years, as it has outgrown its location on the left side of the Eixample.

The new complex will be ambitious in scale, covering more than 300,000 square meters, three times the current space, and will present significant logistical challenges.

According to presidency minister Albert Dalmau, the new facility will be "one of the country's health hubs, as well as a focal point for research and education."

"This will position us as a pioneering region in the European health sector," he added, emphasizing the commitment to complete the project by 2035 or earlier.

The hospital's director, Josep Maria Campistol, stressed that the current location faces "significant space limitations."

"For all of us who have worked at the hospital for years, this project has always been a dream, and now it feels like it is beginning to become a reality," he added.

On Monday, the project's commission was established to outline the construction details, phases, budget and timeline.

"We know that securing funding for an infrastructure of this magnitude is crucial to making it a reality," said urbanism councilor Laia Bonet.

Extension of Line 3

The project will be accompanied by an urban transformation to ensure accessibility and efficient connections for the thousands of patients and professionals who will visit daily.

A key objective is to extend the Line 3 of the Metro, which currently ends at Zona Universitària, to reach the new hospital.

The plan includes adding a new stop near the hospital, connecting it to Esplugues de Llobregat.

The extension would also link to Sant Joan de Déu hospital, which is located near the new Clínic site.

"There was already a planned station to improve access to Sant Joan de Déu. Now, it makes sense to adjust the project to provide accessibility to both hospitals," Bonet explained.

Sant Joan de Déu Hospital is close to the sports complex where the new Clínic will be built, but on the opposite side of Diagonal avenue.
