Around one third of New Year's Eve arrests related to gender-based violence

More than 5,900 emergency calls made, 1,000 more than last year

Twelve of the 35 arrests made by Catalan police Mossos de Esquadra on New Year’s Eve were related to gender violence or domestic violence. Another eleven arrests were made for property crimes, one for causing injury, one for sexual abuse, and ten for other crimes, according to the Catalan Interior Ministry.

The 112 emergency line received 5,943 calls, 1,060 more than last year. 4,166 of the calls were related to the New Year’s celebrations and around 77% of the calls were made from Barcelona.

A total of 1,401 alcohol checks were carried out in Catalonia and a total of 75 drivers were arrested. 18 drug tests were carried out, of which 14 were positive.

A total of 3,100 officers were on duty during New Year’s Eve.

No serious civil protection incidents were registered.
