Municipal technicians review structure of building in Badalona ahead of demolition
105 residents have been evacuated as fire fighters assess damages
Municipal technicians have reviewed the structure of a 5-storey building at risk of collapsing in Badalona's Salut neighborhood for a second time on Saturday before deciding to proceed with its demolition.
The cement used in the construction of the building has deteriorated to dangerous levels, creating large fissures in the structure's walls and a gaping hole in one of the walls leaving a bathroom and a kitchen in plain view.
105 residents have been evacuated, 29 of whom lived in the building in question while the rest reside in the surrounding areas that could also be at risk.
According to Badalona mayor Àlex Pastor, the city council had already asked the property owners to recondition the building five times since 2017 and that the residents' safety was their highest priority: "We should applaud the fact that there were no casualties when there could have been."
