Median income stats reveal Catalonia's richest towns
Matadepera, Sant Cugat del Vallès, and Malla have highest across territory, Salt, Alcanar, and Ulldecona, the lowest
Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE) has published the latest data of median incomes for municipalities across the country, revealing Catalonia's richest and poorest towns.
The data corresponds to 2022 and shows that Matadepera is once again the Catalan town with the highest average income.
According to the figures, the Vallès Occidental town has a median annual income of €33,250.
The calculation of the median income means that half of the population of the town earns higher than this value, and half lower.
Sant Cugat del Vallès and Malla are second and third in this list respectively, meaning the top three of 2021 are repeated.
Sant Cugat has a median income of €31,150 for each 'unit of consumption' - a unit of that measures the net income per household taking into account the number of people who live there.
Salt, Alcanar, Ulldecona, and Lloret de Mar are the towns with more than 5,000 inhabitants that have the lowest incomes, earning around €15,000 a year.
A total of 27 of the top 30 highest earning towns of more than 5,000 inhabitants are in the metropolitan area, including Matadepera itself, and other towns such as Sant Just Desvern, Sant Quirze del Vallès, Vilassar de Mar and la Roca del Vallès.
Barcelona stands at €22,750, almost €3,000 more than the median for Catalonia as a whole - €19,950.
