Spain's Guardia Civil has taken charge of an investigation into the discovery of a man's body on Somorrostro beach in Barcelona on Wednesday morning, police sources informed the Catalan News Agency (ACN). 

A nurse from the Hospital del Mar saw a body floating in the water at around 7:40 am and alerted the emergency services.

Catalan police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, transferred the case to the Spanish Guardia Civil as the body discovered in a maritime area.

The man is believed to have been in his 60s and was clothed, and police say the body does not appear to show signs of violence. 

The man was not carrying ID and the body is awaiting an autopsy and identification.
