Less than half of young men in Catalonia think feminism promotes a fairer and more democratic society
New CEO poll also shows Catalan's perceptions of immigration
Less than half of the young men in Catalonia believe that feminism promotes a fairer and more democratic society, according to the latest poll published on Thursday by CEO, the Catalan-government-owned survey agency.
In addition, 62% of the 5,713 people surveyed think that the government has lost control of the newcomers that arrive to the country.
9 out of 10 support gender equality
Only 46% of men aged 16 to 24 believe that feminism promotes a more democratic society, compared to the 82% of women in that age group who gave an affirmative response.
In addition, there are more men in the age groups 16 to 24 and 35 to 49 who define themselves as "not feminist" than those who identify as feminists.
These differences between younger men and the overall population regarding gender issues are reflected in various CEO survey questions. According to the director of the institution, Joan Rodríguez Teruel, he thinks this is a "critical reaction from sectors of society that feel disadvantaged by the new social norms being established."
While 75% of the overall population thinks that feminism aims for equality, only 52% of younger men agree. Nevertheless, 9 out of 10 people believe that both genders should have the same social status and be treated equally.
More concern about immigration
When it comes to immigration, population values positively the impact that it has on the economy (6.6 out of 10), culture (6.1 out of 10) and social coexistence (5.6).
In addition, most of the population (62%) thinks that the government –without specifying which one- has lost control of who enters the country.
On that same topic, 58% of those surveyed think that there is too much immigration in Catalonia –the highest percentage being among supporters of the conservative People's Party, far-right Vox and far-right pro-independence Aliança Catalana.
The perception of newcomers has worsened since the spring of 2024, when the same survey showed that 48% of people had this view.
