Last cruise leaves Barcelona's World Trade Center dock
Vacated area will become open for pedestrian use
On Monday afternoon, Barcelona's Port bid farewell to the last cruise ship to dock near the World Trade Center, at Moll Barcelona Nord.
About 200 tourists were the last to embark from this point of Barcelona's pier.
The measure comes after an agreement was signed between Port of Barcelona and Barcelona's town hall to further separate cruise terminals from the city center, taking emissions further to the south and reducing the ones that get to the city.
The freed area will become open to residents after the America's Cup takes place in Barcelona in October 2024. The sector is expected to be urbanized by 2025 as Moll Barcelona Nord begins "a period of transition," according to the president of Port of Barcelona Lluís Salvadó.
The southern terminal of the port will continue to be operational until the end of 2026.
The closed harbor welcomed 340 layovers every year, including ferries and cruises. These ships will move its activity to the Moll Adossat and the other existing terminals.
