Kurdish family denied political asylum deported to Iran after landing in Barcelona
Father of family says he was sentenced to 15 years with parole for political work with Kurdish Democratic Party
Spain's National Court denied a request for political asylum from a Kurdish family that landed at Barcelona airport last week, according to police sources. Early on Friday morning, the family was deported.
The request was denied as it did not fulfill the legal requirements, police say, so an appeal was presented but rejected as it contained "inconsistencies."
In the appeal, the reasons the family was asking for political asylum changed from political to religious, according to the same sources.
The father of the family explained that he was part of the Kurdish Democratic Party, which is illegal in Iran. The man is accompanied by his wife, who is two months pregnant, and their seven-year-old son.
The man also explained that he was already sentenced to 15 years with parole because of his political activism.
He also said that he participated in demonstrations of the "Woman Life Freedom" movement, which began after Mahsa Gina Amini's murder due to her not wearing a headscarf in Iran.
Shortly after arriving at Barcelona airport, the activist asked for asylum, he was assisted by a state attorney but his request was denied.
