International drug traffic organization dismantled in Barcelona
Eight arrested in Catalan capital and Ibiza for involvement in synthetic drugs
Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra police, Spain's Guàrdia Civil, and the Australian Federal Police dismantled an international drug trafficking organization specialized in cocaine, ketamine, and MDMA operating in Europe, America, Africa, and Oceania.
The investigation began last April when the Mossos and the Guàrdia Civil identified a group that was using the postal service to send drugs from Barcelona to Australia.
A total of eleven people were arrested, eight between Barcelona and Ibiza and three others abroad.
The group was hierarchically organized, with a 39-year-old leader who also managed the finances, negotiated selling prices, and created a network of international contacts to send the drug. He was also part of the team preparing the packages for worldwide delivery.
Other members were responsible for the security and storage of the drugs, the logistics of transportation, and selling the product to the end customer, among other tasks.
Police intercepted a package at the Barcelona airport with the text 'Newborn Christmas present' that contained 2.3 kilograms of ketamine hidden among powdered milk, clothing, and toys.
Australian Federal Police agents traveled to Barcelona to assist during police raids.
Agents seized large quantities of synthetic drugs such as cocaine, Tusi (pink cocaine), hashish, marijuana, ketamine, and methamphetamine. Police also found precision scales, phone devices, IT materials, a safe box, and cash, among other items.
