International congress aims to commemorate Battle of the Ebre
Tortosa to host talks and debates on 80th anniversary of Civil War’s longest and bloodiest conflict
Eighty years ago this year, the longest, largest and bloodiest confrontation of the Spanish Civil War took place: the Battle of the Ebre. Among the events planned to commemorate the anniversary of the clash that proved disastrous for the Republican forces is the International Congress of the Battle of the Ebre, which will take place at the end of September and beginning of October in the southern town of Tortosa, near where the battle took place.
The international congress, which will be split over two weekends (September 28 to 30, and October 5 to 7), will be held in Tortosa’s Felip Pedrell Auditorium and will feature talks and debates aimed at, among other things, recovering local stories of the battle, while contextualizing the economic consequences for the local area. The meeting will also condemn the lack of political will to make reparations to the victims and to recover the bodies of the thousands of soldiers who died in the battle.
