Hundreds attend solidarity protest in Barcelona over death of young Iranian woman
"Woman, life, freedom" chants heard at demonstration against Islamic republic
A few hundred people gathered at Barcelona's Plaça Sant Jaume square on Tuesday evening to protest the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman who passed away just over a week ago after being detained by morality police in Tehran for allegedly wearing her headscarf incorrectly.
While Iranian authorities have denied any wrongdoing, the suspicious circumstances of her death triggered outrage across the country and a wave of violently suppressed anti-government protests.
Amini's death has also sparked demonstrations worldwide, with people in the Catalan capital too expressing their support for the "woman, life, freedom" movement.
Demonstrators in the city center square beside the Catalan government and Barcelona council headquarters waved Iranian flags and held banners displaying the young woman's name as well as slogans against the Islamic republic. Some women even cut their hair in protest.
Around 1,800 Iranians live in Catalonia according to the most recent census data.
