Costa Brava wildfire 'extinguished' after burning 600 hectares
Blaze broke out Friday evening between towns of Portbou and Colera
Firefighters announced midday on Tuesday that the wildfire that broke out in northern Catalonia's Costa Brava area had been "extinguished."
The blaze that broke out Friday evening, only hours after restrictions were put in place due to the elevated risk of fires, scorched almost 600 hectares: 387 in the municipality of Colera and 185 in Portbou.
As a result, the N-260 highway between Colera and Portbou was closed off to traffic over the weekend.
The wildfire was "under control" on Monday and "stabilized" over the weekend.
This is not the first time the area has been hit by wildfires; only months ago, another one burnt over 900 hectares mainly on the French side of the border.
Catalonia is in the midst of a three-year drought, making it even more vulnerable to wildfires.
