Catalonia welcomes 2.3 million visitors during July
Number of international tourists decreases by 2.5% compared to 2019
Catalonia welcomed 2,319,824 foreign tourists in July this year. The figure shows that Catalonia has truly left the pandemic behind, as it represents an increass of 16.2% on the number of visitors that arrived, according to the Spanish Statistic Institute (INE).
However, the number of visitors that came this July is still lower than the amount that arrived in 2019 – 2,378,593 – down by 2.5%.
In all of Spain, the pre-pandemic numbers were surpassed, with 10.1 million visitors in total, an increase of 2.6%.
It is the first time that the number of international tourists to Spain surpassed 10 million in July alone.
In the first seven months of 2023, more than 47.6 million people visited Spain, 20.9% more than compared to the same period last year.
In July, 22.9% of the foreign visitors in Spain came to in Catalonia, making it the region with the second-most amount of foreign visitors in all of Spain, closing a "really positive summer season."
The Balearic Islands, with 2.4 million visitors, was the region that saw most international tourists: 24.1% of the Spanish total.
In Catalonia, each visitor spends an average of €213 a day, €11 more than in 2022, and €14 more than before the Covid-19 pandemic. In total, international tourists spent €2.9 billion this year.
When it comes to the increase in average spending, it is important to take into account the increase in inflation which has caused prices to increase.
