Catalonia sees wettest March this century
Temperatures and sunshine levels lower than usual due to cloud cover

As anyone living in Catalonia can testify, March was a very wet month.
A report from the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (Meteocat) backs this up: March 2025 was the rainiest of the 21st century so far, slightly surpassing March 2011.
It was also one of the wettest ever recorded in Catalonia, comparable to March 1974.
The cloud cover meant Catalonia saw much lower maximum temperatures than usual for this time of year, although minimum temperatures weren't as low as normal.
Sunshine levels were also lower than usual for this time of year.
Wettest month since January 2020
Catalonia as a whole hasn't experienced such a rainy month since January 2020, when Storm Gloria hit.
The month was "extremely rainy" for much of Catalonia, and "rainy" at the northern and southern extremes of the coast, and in the north-west
More than 500mm of rainfall was recorded in the Ports massif (Baix Ebre), over 400mm in Arbúcies (Selva) and Lliurona (Alt Empordà), and almost 400mm in Espot (Pallars Sobirà).
The arrival of a strong Atlantic storm caused heavy rainfall March 6-9, with 210.4mm recorded in Beget (Ripollès), 200mm in Ports Natural Park (Baix Ebre), and 195.2mm in Puig Sesolles (Vallès Oriental).
This storm also brought considerable snowfall to high mountain areas, with more than half a meter of snow falling in some places. For example, 83 centimeters in Ulldeter (2,410 meters above sea level), 61 centimeters in Espot (2,519 meters), and 59 centimeters in Boí (2,535 meters).
There was also heavy rain March 13-15, with more than 40mm in the south of Catalonia and in the central Pre-Pyrenees.
In the Pyrenees, snow fell mostly in eastern and central areas, reaching 30cm in Cadí Nord and Prat d'Aguiló.
More rain arrived between March 18 and 20, particularly in the northeast, with 109.1mm recorded in Anglès and 104.1mm in Arbúcies (Selva).
Lastly, there was rain across Catalonia from March 21 to 25, especially in the northwest. In Certascan, 118mm was recorded, in Espot 104.8, and in Ulldeter 91.8. There was also heavy snow.
Reservoirs filling up
Catalonia has suffered from a severe drought in recent years, but, during March, Catalan reservoirs surpassed 50% capacity for the first time since July 2022.
Following the recent rain, Catalonia's most famous reservoir, the Sau reservoir, has been attracting visitors to come and see and take photos of the sunken church of the drowned town of Sant Romà.
