A Catalan woman was killed after an avalanche in Georgia, Eastern Europe, on Wednesday during a ski trip, as reported by the Catalan News Agency (ACN). The events took place in the mountain of Ushguli, near the Russian border.

The 53-year-old woman was a resident in the southern municipality of Selva del Camp, in Tarragona. Yolanda Hernández Curulla was a charge head of the local Guàrdia Urbana police, according to the city's council.

She was part of a six-person expedition group, with three of the other travelers coming from Catalonia. There was also a Valencian skier and a German woman.

Before the avalanche, the group was skiing a slope when they were surprised by the avalanche.

Three skiers, including the woman, were injured, while two others had minor injuries and are already out of the hospital.

She had been a member of the Selva del Camp's Club Arítjol, but she was now a member of the online club MadTeam. According to the Catalan hikers' clubs federation, she was not a registered hiker.

Sources of the Spanish foreign affairs ministry said that the Spanish expedition in Georgia is coordinating onsite assistance with local authorities.

Meanwhile, Spain's delegate in Catalonia Carlos Prieto said that he is "closely following the events that caused an avalanche in Georgia."

Avalanche in Armenia

This is the second accident of such in the last 15 days, as on March 11, a Sant Joan de les Abadesses local died in Armenia, also due to an avalanche.

Back then, seven more people were injured, and one person did not suffer any injuries and helped the rescue team locate the body of their colleague.
