Catalan Traffic Service warns road network 'at limit' of capacity
Checks for speeding, drink-driving and distracted driving to step up over summer
The director of the Catalan Traffic Service (Servei Català de Trànsit) has warned that the Catalan road network is "at the limit" of its capacity and said that it is necessary to improve connectivity to improve transit and combat accidents.
Ramon Lamiel was speaking at a press conference with Catalan interior minister, Joan Ignasi Elena, in which they gave a positive assessment of the reduction in accidents by 6% in the first half of 2024.
They called for "caution" on Catalan roads this summer and announced they will be increasing the number of check points for speeding, drink-driving and distracted driving.
More checks will also be carried out on heavy goods vehicles and more helicopter flights will be deployed to observe traffic.
There were 18 deaths on Catalan roads in June, eight more than in 2023.
