Barcelona's Magic Fountain of Montjuïc could reopen in August 2025
City council will invest €3 million to renovate its iconic fountain, closed since 2022 due to drought
The iconic Montjuïc hill is one of Barcelona's most famous landmarks, but since 2022, it has been missing one of its main attractions: the Magic Fountain.
Due to the severe drought affecting Catalonia over the past three years, the city closed its fountains to conserve water.
Taking advantage of the fact that most of the city's fountains are inactive and many have deteriorated due to lack of use, the city council has decided to undertake a major renovation.
The council has committed to investing nearly €8 million in the maintenance, improvement, and renovation of the city's ornamental fountains.
One of the major projects will involve the fountains on Montjuïc, including the Magic Fountain and the fountains along the Avinguda de Maria Cristina leading up to Plaça Espanya.
The Magic Fountain will receive a €3 million investment to upgrade its control systems, sound and lighting with energy-efficient technologies.
For example, nearly 5,000 lights on the fountain will be replaced with LED fixtures.
The project is expected to be completed by August 2025, at which point, if permitted by the drought regulations, the fountain could reopen, nearly three years after it was closed.
