Barcelona will expand the L2 line of the metro line from Sant Antoni to Parc Logístic in the Zona Franca area of Montjuïc.

Territory minister Sílvia Paneque and the city's mayor, Jaume Collboni, agreed to "unblock" the extension plans in a project that would extend the metro to Montjuïc and improve connections to the airport.

In a meeting on Monday, the two administrations gave their commitment to updating the project and performing an environmental impact study before moving forward with the construction bidding.

Neither administration provided a timeline for the project, but they stated that the preliminary stage now being launched has a maximum duration of 24 months.

The metro extension project has a budget of €1 billion, double the initial estimate from the last study in 2009.

The project was designed in the early 1990s as part of the Olympic development of Barcelona but was never carried out.

According to the minister, the new line will span six kilometers with the same route initially planned in 2006.

The tunnel boring machine will dig 5.4 kilometers from the Parc Logístic station to Poble-sec. The remaining 0.6 kilometers, between Poble-sec and Sant Antoni, will involve a tunnel between screens.

Jaume Collboni described the project as a "long-standing demand of the city" to better connect areas such as Montjuïc.

Collboni emphasized the importance of the new line for connecting cultural and economic institutions like Fira de Barcelona, which is set to be revamped ahead of the 2029 centenary of the Universal Exposition, and the MNAC art museum, which will also be expanded into the Victoria Eugènia Pavilion.

New bus stations

In addition, Paneque and Collboni agreed to create a working group to plan new bus stations by 2028, when the current contracts for intercity bus routes expire.

At this stage, the administrations have not specified how many new bus stations are needed, but they indicated that the existing stations at Sants, Estació del Nord, and Fabra i Puig "will not be sufficient," and instead officials detailed the need to "organize" the entire network.
