Barcelona Supercomputing Center unveils MareNostrum 5 supercomputer
Machine has performance equivalent to 380,000 mid-range laptops
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) has launched MareNostrum 5, a new supercomputer capable of performing 314,000 billion calculations per second.
Compared to its previous version, MareNostrum 4, the computing power is 23 times higher, from 13.9 petaflops to 314 petaflops.
Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez inaugurated it on Thursday, along with Catalan President Pere Aragonès, before their meeting at the Catalan executive's headquarters.
"It is an extraordinary advance, a remarkable achievement that symbolizes the great opportunity for Barcelona and Catalonia to become a true global reference in the scientific field," said Sánchez.
The machine has the performance of 380,000 mid-range laptops. It can perform calculations in an hour that would take a laptop 46 years to complete.
The cost of building the supercomputer is €202 million.
