The Barcelona City Council has opened 226 Christmas tree collection points across the city, available to use from January 7-17.

The initiative aims to prevent the improper disposal of trees in public spaces while repurposing a natural resource to for the maintenance of parks and gardens.

Waste collection services will regularly pick up trees and branches, which must be free of any decorative elements.

After collection, parks and gardens staff will process the trees into mulch, which will be left to mature before being used to improve the city's green spaces.

Last year, a total of 10,273 Christmas trees were collected and recycled in Barcelona.

The mulch, created from shredded plant material, helps improve soil moisture retention and aeration while also reducing the growth of weeds.

The process requires two to three months of treatment to achieve high-quality mulch. From last year’s trees, 195 cubic meters of mulch were produced, which will be distributed across the city’s green spaces during the first half of the year.
