Barcelona is the most expensive city in Spain to rent a room, with an average of €550 a month, according to rental platform Idealista.

The Catalan capital exceeds the average price per room in Madrid, which is €525, and Valencia, where the average cost is €400.

According to the real estate portal, the most expensive district in Spain is Barcelona's Ciutat Vella old town, where it costs an average of €625 per month, followed by Chamberí in Madrid and Sarrià Sant-Gervasi, at €612 and €605 respectively.

These three are the only districts that exceed a monthly price of €600 for a room.

Idealista also points out that six out of ten rooms for rent in all of Spain are located in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. Specifically, the Spanish capital contains 30% of the shared flats available, Barcelona 20%, and Valencia 10%.

Comparing year-on-year increases of the three most expensive districts in Spain, Ciutat Vella has seen a 4.2% increase, Chamberí 12.3%, and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi 5.2%.

The Eixample district is the sixth most expensive district in all of Spain at €590 euros, 7.3% more than last year, while Les Corts is in 11th place at a price of €550 euros (+7.4%).

Gràcia is 12th on the national list at €530 (+8.2%); Sants Montjuïc 13th at €500 (+4.2%); Sant Martí 14th at €497 (+5.7%); and Horta-Guinardó 15th at €490 (+8.9%).
