Barcelona City Council has started installing wooden fences at 22 sites to protect trash containers from wild boars in some of the city's neighborhoods in the Collserola hills.

The work is being undertaken in areas that have a significant population both of people – and therefore a large amount of rubbish – and of wild boars.

The council's strategy also involves clearing bushes and asking people not to feed the animals.

In 2022, a pilot test was carried out with three enclosures to see whether wild boars could be prevented from knocking over the containers and scattering the rubbish.

After the trial's success, the city council has decided to fence off bins in 22 more areas in the Vallvidrera, Tibidabo and Les Planes neighborhoods.

The work has a budget of €111,562 and started this week, with the aim of it being completed before the summer.

Fastenings and bars have also been placed in the containers to make them inaccessible to wild boars.
