Barcelona holds moment of silence to honor terror attack victims
"We are not afraid!" chant thousands of people after remembrance event
Thousands of people took place in a moment of silence on Friday to honor the victims of the Barcelona terrorist attack. Authorities and citizens came together at Plaça de Catalunya, near la Rambla, where on Thursday a van hit pedestrians, killing 14 and injuring 100. A second incident in Cambrils, in southern Catalonia, ended up with seven people injured, including one police officer.
The Catalan president, Carles Puigdemont, the vice president, Oriol Junqueras, and the mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau, took place in the remembrance event, which was presided by the Spanish king, Felipe VI. The Spanish president and vice president, Mariano Rajoy and Soraya Saénz de Santamaría, also participated in the homage, along with several ministers from the Catalan executive and representatives from political parties. After the one-minute silence, people chanted: "We are not afraid."
