Barcelona hits record population of 1.7 million
Number of residents grew by 1% in over a year, with uninterrupted growth since 2022
Barcelona's population continues to grow, reaching unprecedented levels. In September last year, the city recorded 1,718,149 inhabitants, marking an all-time high.
The figures were first reported by El Periódico newspaper on Friday and later confirmed by city council sources to the Catalan News Agency (ACN).
The September figures, the latest available, show a significant increase over August, when the population stood at 1,700,895 - an increase of more than 17,000 inhabitants.
Over the course of a year, from September 2023 to September 2024, the city's population grew by 1%.
Population growth from 2022
The city's census data dates back to January 1997, when the population was 1,493,663.
At the turn of the century, the population began to grow rapidly, surpassing 1.6 million by 2008.
However, the financial crisis of 2008 caused the population to dip, followed by years of fluctuations that always remained below the 1.6 million mark.
In 2020, with a population of 1,673,579, Barcelona's numbers began to fall again, reaching a low of 1,638,032 residents in April 2022.
From that point on, however, the population began a steady recovery, culminating in the current record of over 1,718,000 inhabitants.
